Volunteer Job Description
The Bereavement Support Volunteer offers support during
the defined Hospice bereavement period of 13 months. These volunteers
should not have had prior assignment to the family and loved ones
associated with Hospice of Chattanooga.
Typical services provided by Bereavement Support Volunteers are:
- working with the HOC Bereavement Coordinator to provide a
listening ear to Hospice families;
- working at home making phone calls and sending cards to families
during the bereavement period;
- encouraging family members to attend the HOC Memorial Service and
various support groups in the community
Skills and Training:
Bereavement Support Volunteers must;
- complete the Hospice Training Course or comparable approved
training;
- attend a special Bereavement Training tailored to bereavement
needs;
- be able to take notes as they are making calls to family members;
- be able to recognize when a family member might need more help
than they are able to offer and be a resource person to refer an
individual to refer to get the needed help.
Time Commitment:
Hospices of Chattanooga volunteers are encouraged to;
- do their assignments on a monthly basis (this can be done from
home) and submit reports within the same month;
- attend a one-hour continuing education class per month --last
Tuesday of each month, usually at the Hospice of Chattanooga office;
- sign up to help with one Hospice of Chattanooga's Memorial Service
each year.
Supervision:
- The Volunteer Coordinator will connect you with the Bereavement
Coordinator for all future assignments;
- Volunteer must complete needed paperwork and make sure it is
turned in to the Bereavement Coordinator on time each month.
